Springtime Plumbing Check-Up Tips
admin • April 25, 2016

Given how complex residential plumbing systems are, it’s important that you do everything you can to make sure they are working well and not experiencing any troubling symptoms. Springtime is the perfect time to check for any issues, so you can stay ahead of any plumbing problems as the weather warms up. Pay attention to the checklist we’ve shared below and let us know if you run into any issues or concerns.

o   Inspect Your Drains: Ensure that the drains surrounding your home are free of clogs and ready for what’s to come. Additionally, if you have ground drains that are rarely used, poor a gallon of water in each to make sure there’s no water backup.

o   Test Your Sump Pump: You can do this by pouring a few buckets of water in the sump pump pit. It should kick in right away and start pumping out water. If it doesn’t, then there is a problem.

o   Check Your Outdoor Plumbing: This includes clearing your gutters and making sure that all downpipes are directed away from your property at the right degree. You should also check your pipes and taps for leaks or corrosion.

o   Check Your Water Heater: One of the most common water heater problems that homeowners experience are leaks. Take a look around the bottom of your water heater tank. Is there any leftover water around it, or around the fixtures at the top of you water heater?

o   Don’t Forget Your Toilets: You can put a few drops of food coloring into the toilet tank—not the bowl—and check to see if the color appears in the bowl within an hour. If it does, then it is time for plumbing repairs. Also, be sure to check for water around the base of your toilet.

o   Check Faucets: Do you have water leaking around the base of your sink, or dripping from the drains under your sink? Whether this is occurring in your bathroom or your kitchen, it’s something that should be taken care of right away. Even the smallest leak can add up when it comes to water and energy waste.
